Definition

Volume Weighted Average Price (VWAP) is the average price of an asset over a specified period, weighted by trading volume rather than by time.

Unlike a simple moving average, VWAP gives greater influence to prices where more trading actually occurred.

For institutional traders, VWAP is one of the most important benchmarks in modern financial markets because it answers a fundamental question:

"What is the average price that market participants actually paid today?"

This makes VWAP not just an indicator, but a widely used benchmark for execution quality, fair value, and institutional positioning.

Beginner Explanation

Imagine two Bitcoin trades.

  • One trader buys 0.01 BTC at \$100,000.

  • Another institution buys 2,000 BTC at \$100,000.

A simple average treats both trades equally.

But should they be?

Of course not.

The institutional purchase has a far greater impact on the market.

VWAP recognizes this by giving more weight to prices where more volume was traded.
