Definition
Volume analysis is the study of trading activity to understand the level of participation, conviction, and force behind price movements.
Price tells you:
Where the market moved.
Volume tells you:
How much participation supported that movement.
The central idea:
Price movement without participation is often unreliable. Price movement supported by strong participation is more likely to continue.
Beginner Explanation

A volume analyst asks:
"How many people participated in that move?"
Scenario One:
Price rises.
Volume increases.
Many traders are participating.
Scenario Two:
Price rises.
Volume declines.
Fewer traders are supporting the move.
