Definition

Smart Money Concepts (SMC) is a trading framework based on the idea that large market participants—institutions, funds, banks, and professional traders—leave identifiable footprints through price movement.

SMC focuses on:

  • Liquidity.

  • Market structure.

  • Institutional accumulation and distribution.

  • Imbalances.

  • Order execution zones.

  • Price inefficiencies.

The central idea:

Large participants cannot enter and exit positions invisibly. Their activity creates patterns in price.

SMC attempts to identify those patterns.

Beginner Explanation

Most retail traders ask:

"Where is the next buy signal?"

SMC traders ask:

"Where did large participants likely place their positions?"

The difference is important.

A retail trader may see:

"Bitcoin broke resistance."

An SMC trader analyzes:

  • Was liquidity taken first?

  • Did structure change?

  • Was there institutional buying?

  • Did price leave an imbalance?

  • Where might institutions defend their position?
