Definition

Market Profile is a trading framework that organizes price activity based on time spent at each price level to reveal how markets discover value.

Created by Peter Steidlmayer in the 1980s, Market Profile introduced a way to visualize markets as an ongoing auction process.

The central question:

"Where is the market accepting value, and where is it rejecting value?"

Traditional technical analysis focuses on:

  • Patterns.

  • Indicators.

  • Price levels.

Market Profile focuses on:

  • Auction behavior.

  • Participation.

  • Value.

  • Balance.

  • Imbalance.

Beginner Explanation

A market is an auction.

Every second:

Buyers and sellers negotiate.

If both sides agree:

Price stays.

If one side becomes more aggressive:

Price moves.

Market Profile shows:

Where the auction spent time.

Example:

Bitcoin trades:

\$100,000

\$101,000

\$102,000

Then spends three days around:

\$101,000.

The market is saying:

"This is currently fair value."
