Definition

A Layer 2 (L2) network is a secondary blockchain system built on top of a Layer 1 blockchain that processes transactions more efficiently while relying on the underlying Layer 1 for security and settlement.

Layer 2 networks attempt to solve the biggest blockchain challenge:

How can blockchains scale to billions of users while maintaining security and decentralization?

Examples of Layer 2 solutions:

  • Rollups.

  • State channels.

  • Sidechains.

  • Validiums.

  • Plasma systems.

The central idea:

Layer 2 networks move transaction activity away from the main blockchain while preserving the security guarantees of the underlying Layer 1.

Beginner Explanation

Imagine a busy highway.

The Layer 1 blockchain is the main highway.

Everyone uses it.

As more cars enter:

  • Traffic increases.

  • Travel slows.

  • Costs rise.

Instead of building a completely new highway:

Layer 2 creates additional lanes.

Transactions happen on Layer 2.

Final results are recorded back on Layer 1.

The goal:

More speed.

Lower costs.

Same security.
