A beginner's guide to reading crypto price charts — candlesticks, trends, support and resistance, volume, and why charts can't predict the future.
Charts are the most seductive thing in crypto. A price chart looks like it contains the future — patterns, trends, signals — and the promise that if you can just learn to read it, you'll know when to buy and sell. That promise is mostly false, but charts do contain useful information if you know what to look for and, more importantly, what to ignore.
This guide covers the basics of reading a crypto price chart: candlesticks, trends, support and resistance, volume, and a few common patterns. It's beginner-level — not the advanced technical analysis covered in our Encyclopedia Volume II. The goal isn't to make you a trader; it's to help you understand what you're looking at, avoid the most common chart-reading mistakes, and know when a chart is telling you something useful versus when it's just noise you're pattern-matching into a narrative.
The most common chart type in crypto is the candlestick chart. Each "candle" shows four pieces of information for a specific time period (1 minute, 1 hour, 1 day, etc.):
The "body" of the candle (the thick part) shows the difference between open and close. If the close is higher than the open, the candle is green (or sometimes blue/white) — price went up. If the close is lower, the candle is red — price went down. The "wicks" or "shadows" (the thin lines above and below the body) show the high and low.
A single candle tells you what happened in that time period. A sequence of candles tells you a story about supply and demand — but that story is always partial, always ambiguous, and always easier to read in hindsight.
Charts can be set to different timeframes: 1-minute, 5-minute, 15-minute, 1-hour, 4-hour, 1-day, 1-week. The timeframe you choose dramatically changes what the chart "says":
The rule: if you find yourself checking a 1-minute chart, you're probably about to overtrade. Switch to a daily chart. If the daily chart doesn't show a clear reason to act, the answer is usually "do nothing."
